They do so out of fear of discovery. This may be the conscience revealing itself. We are all born with conscience, it is God's common gift to humankind. We all instinctively know what is wrong, and when we do wrong, it could be that we give ourselves away in a variety of ways, and that this is our conscience screaming out. If we disobey this conscience repeatedly, in the end it becomes seared as with a hot iron, and it no longer has the power to convict us. At this point, we may lie and be entirely convincing. This is not a good place to be in.
