Currently, FCI recognizes nearly 400 dog breeds and varieties worldwide. Those that are unknown in the United States are often termed "rare breeds," which some are, indeed. Others are common-place in their homeland, but still relatively unheard of in some areas of the world. The popularity of many lesser known breeds is increasing, however, in their native lands and the United States.
I would imagine this list would not include half-breeds, cross breeds and just plain mongrels.
