big tip but for not for absolute beginner.
Go to start -> run -> put in "msconfig"
in the right tabs you can then find applications which you recognize but dont need. Do not check off applications that you dont recognize as some are important for windows or get someone who knows computer to do it for you. then restart system. It will be much faster.
Also get more RAM. How much do you have?

Clean the system, use disk fragmentation, registry cleaner, spyware, run Norton antivirus, decrease the size of C drive and store only important boot files and installation files. Move all the other private folders to other drives. Try by foratting
If nothing makes it better, replace the hardwares like RAM, chipset, . even if this doesn't work better buy new!

Just by running disk clean up and then do a disk defrag which is found in your utilities...its like giving your pc/laptop a tune up
