The model proposes that individuals suffering from alcoholism differ physiologically from those that do not suffer from alcoholism. Alcoholism is described as a progressive disease that allows little restrain or self-control on part of the alcohol-dependent individual. The individual is not longer seen as responsible for his/her alcohol problems, but rather as having a problem beyond his/her individual control.
