My birthday is October 7 1955. I was born in a maternity hospital in west London, England. On this day, several poets of the Beat Generation gathered at San Franciso's Six Gallery for a poetry reading. It's believed by many to be the starting point of the Beat revolution. Apres eux, le deluge.

The day I was born was on July 29; however I quit having birthdays when my daughter was born on July 31. Therefore, I will forever be 28 years old!

December 12, 1952 at 1:27 p.m. Anderson, Indiana time was when I came into the world. I was born at what is now called St. John's Medical Center but was then called St. John's Hickey Memorial Hospital. The doctor who delivered me was Dr. Warren Polhemus who will be 90 this May. The last name of the attending nurse was Williamson, and I met her son (or was it her nephew) when I was in my late twenties or early thirties, though we had no idea of the connection at the time. The maternity ward of the older part of the hospital became the Continuing Care ward--which meant that, whenever my dad (who had Parkinson's) was too well for the hospital, not able to return home yet, but not ready for a nursing home, he stayed in the same place where (according to some) his feet were barely touching the ground back in December of 1952. When I was born, Truman was still in The White House--but, even before the picture I've used here in my ID was taken, leadership had been turned over to Ike.
